The Spiritual Origins of Halloween

Saturday Night Lecture REPLAY

Presented by Deborah Roth

Ever wonder about the historical and spiritual “backstory” of all our favorite Halloween traditions like jack-o’-lanterns, trick-or-treating, and scary-costume-wearing?

Since ancient times, cultures all over the world have marked the seasonal “wheel of the year” with celebrations reflecting the cycles of nature. And in the mid-Fall, all of nature seems to be dying…the leaves decay, the birds head south, the first frosts appear. The days grow shorter and in this deep, liminal time, celebrations have long been observed as a feast of the dead and an honoring of ancestors.

Join us as we explore some of these multi-cultural traditions and create sacred space to enter the darkest weeks of the year with our own modern-day remembrance ritual.
