Blending Wisdom with Wellness – The Metaphysical Center of New Jersey Takes Root in Ridgewood

As the world embraces wellness culture, the term “wellness” has grown to encompass a variety of holistic ways to nurture bodies, minds and spirits. In addition to organic foods and yoga classes, practices like energy healing, manifestation, astrology and crystal therapy have found a new home under the expansive wellness umbrella. This convergence marks a shift in how people view health and purpose, as modern self-care trends are reviving interest in ancient metaphysical traditions and their application in daily life.

With its new home base right here in Ridgewood, the Metaphysical Center of New Jersey (MCNJ) is a resource for those looking for effective tools for greater alignment and personal transformation. “Meta means above and beyond, while physical refers to the physical plane,” explains Metaphysical Center of New Jersey President Bill Prinzivalli. “Therefore,” he adds, “‘metaphysical’ just refers to all planes beyond the physical world.”

Bill emphasizes that there has always been a need for these teachings and there have always been seekers looking to explore what is beyond the material world. As we go through life, we frequently become distracted by the physical aspects of the world, such as wealth or status, only to find them to be shallow and unfulfilling, whether we consciously recognize it or not. With a stated purpose to educate, enlighten and encourage spiritual consciousness, MCNJ welcomes the community to engage with these metaphysical teachings as a way to find deeper meaning.

“We’re not a religion,” Bill explains. “Metaphysics encompasses the underlying truths of religions, as well as universal principles and ancient wisdom teachings passed on verbally from teacher to student. Hence, our motto ‘When the student is ready, the teacher appears.’ We offer an open door to explore spirituality in a non-religious way so people can choose what seems right for them.”

Two years ago, Bill was tapped to lead the non-profit organization — something that he did not expect but felt called to do. Previously he had an impressive career that included starting four successful businesses, but he also studied esoteric subjects to satisfy another part of himself. “It felt like I was living a bit of a dual life, and I was looking for a way to merge my interests,” he said. “Having built a reputation and credibility through my work, I feel like my mission now is to bring creative consciousness to the business world.”

Leading the resurgence of metaphysical teachings remains the MCNJ’s primary focus and, under Bill’s leadership, he and the Board of Directors are sharing their message with renewed enthusiasm to engage current and future generations. What began in 1956 when Donald H. Yott, a scholar of World Religions and Esoteric Philosophies and teacher at Pompton Lakes High School, was encouraged by his mentor, John Hay, to establish a metaphysical center in northern New Jersey, has continued to evolve while remaining embedded in Bergen and Passaic Counties. Now, as they enter their seventh decade, MCNJ is excited to have the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood as their new space for events.

“We’re embracing new technologies, offering one-of-a-kind experiences, and welcoming the community’s involvement as we continue to grow,” says Bill. In addition to their Saturday night lecture series and a 13-level course in metaphysics, MCNJ will host events such as a Healing & Psychic Fair on November 15, a Celebration of Life Holiday Party on December 13 and a 70th anniversary celebration in 2026.

As part of the celebration, MCNJ President Bill Prinzivalli was interviewed by the Ridgewood Chamber. In his interview, Bill discusses the organization’s mission to integrate body, mind, and spirit through metaphysical education, the nature of spiritual inquiry, and how their programs help people explore deeper dimensions of consciousness and healing. Topics include the center’s 13-semester course, energy healing events like sound baths, and the growing connection between metaphysics and modern science.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2025 is the year of the Yin Wood Snake. Looking at the meanings of Snake and of Wood gives a picture of what 2025 may hold.

In Chinese philosophy and medicine, there are five elements: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. These elements are used to explain change and movement in both the cosmos and in the body. In this system, the wood and metal elements are described as being yin or yang. These are opposite forces that interact and are meant to create balance and harmony.

Some words used to describe Yin energy are passive, inviting, adaptive, flexible, gentle, and tentative. Words which describe Yang energy are active, expansive, repelling, impulsive, judgmental, and aggressive.

One way to think of Yin Wood is to think of bamboo as it blows in the wind: strong but able to bend. Yang Wood brings to mind an oak tree, sturdy and deep rooted not greatly affected by strong winds. This is the year of the Yin Wood Snake so the energies of both wood and snake will be more subtle. The transformation and personal growth that is predicted for 2025 will be more easygoing and flexible.

Since ancient times, the Snake has been associated with wisdom and fertility as in the creative life force. It is a symbol of rebirth and transformation as it sheds its skin in order to grow. Snake is also associated with immortality and is depicted as an ouroboros: a snake eating its own tail. This represents eternity, infinity, the totality of existence, and the cycle in nature of birth, death, and rebirth.

Snake is also connected with healing through the link to Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine. He carried a staff with a serpent wrapped around it which today is a symbol used in many areas of modern medicine. It has been confused with the caduceus, which was a staff entwined with two serpents and wings at the top carried by the messenger god Hermes. Often thought to be connected with commerce, it is actually a symbol of the kundalini energy lying coiled like a snake at the base of the root chakra waiting to rise in the body as we become enlightened.

This year of the Yin Wood Snake will present opportunities to grow and change by renewing oneself, shedding the old, and being open to creative new possibilities. Questions you might ask:

What do I need to let go of in my life?

What am I willing to walk away from? (People, things that no longer serve me.)

What can I declutter? Old clothes, paperwork, “things”

What bad habits can I release?

What unrealistic expectations can I let go of?

What am I holding onto emotionally from my past that is time to release?

Since Snake is associated with wisdom and the creative life force, it would be wise to use this year to also delve into creativity in whatever that means for you. What would being creative look like for you? Taking risks? Doing crafts? Using your imagination? Writing stories or poetry? Thinking outside the box? Finding solutions to challenges in your life?

Our natural state is one of being co-creators with the Divine, the Source of All that is. What can you do each day to connect with that energy?

recognize and use your gifts

go within and do some “soul work”

be a conscious steward of the Earth and all of creation

make a vision board to intentionally create the life of your dreams

try different healing modalities including using your own innate healing power

So, in this Year of the Yin Wood Snake, a year of growth and transformation, look for opportunities to connect with the yin energy in order to balance any yang energy you may be feeling. Take time to be more creative in ways that delight you as that will encourage even more expansion and change in your life. Create the life you want to have by releasing that which no longer serves you (especially your thoughts and beliefs about your story so far!). Find ways to use the energies of both the Wood element and the Snake to bring about the growth and transformation promised in this Chinese lunar New Year of the Wood Snake.

Dear MCNJ members and friends,

As many of you know there are several fires raging out of control in the LA area in California. There are things metaphysicians can do from wherever you live as energy does not depend on time or space.

1. Jim and Basia Conroy (the Tree Whisperers) spoke for MCNJ and gave us tools to mitigate the winds during Hurricane Sandy. With up to 100 mph winds in LA, we, too, can communicate and work in partnership with the Wind and Fire Nature Spirits to lessen, even eliminate, their impact.

2. The Ho’opopno Hawaiian prayer from Dr. Hew Len is powerful. Since we are all One, when we notice something, like the fires, we can clear the part of us inside that is being shown in the outer world. The original prayer is four simple statements:
I’m sorry (for forgetting that we are one—you and the wind, fire)
Please forgive me
Thank you
I love you.

Just saying this over and over as a mantra is enough. You don’t have to analyze or understand, just set your intention for the most benevolent outcome.

3. Call upon Jesus or Archangel Michael and his team to spread a fire blanket over the region. We have been told that the Higher Spirits of the unseen world are waiting to help but they cannot interfere. They must be asked. Now is the time to ask.

Remember that you are a powerful being. Use your power wisely and well.

We are sad to report that a dear and special friend of the center, Karl Schinke, has passed over on April 19th, 2024.

Karl volunteered many of his personal hours over many years, performing a variety of tasks including writing a monthly newsletter with his wife Barbara, sitting on the board as parliamentarian and advisor, performing needed data conversions, and so much more.

Born on November 21st, 1938, he achieved Mechanical Engineering degrees (BS and MS) from Stevens institute in the 1960s. He retired from Honeywell Corporation and also received a Technical Achievement Award in 2001.

Karl was an avid violinist, starting his study at the age of 5 and continuing to play throughout his life with various groups including the Palermo quartet on a weekly basis.

He was a voracious reader and loved to tinker with various projects giving him the family nickname of “Mr. Fix It”.

Karl is survived by his wife Barbara, his daughter Doreen, his grandson Angel, and granddaughter Ariana.

We, at MCNJ, are eternally grateful for his service, his wisdom, and his heart. He will be deeply missed. We send him the most beautiful loving energy as he passes and transitions to his new home. We love you, Karl.

Dear Friends,

We are thrilled to announce our first events of this new chapter of MCNJ!!

On May 20 & 21, we are holding our virtual Psychic Fair Fundraiser. Our website is updated allowing you to register for a 30-minute session with any of our 8 outstanding and vetted psychics – many of whom have been with us for several years. Please help support this fundraiser and remember – these donation fees are tax deductible.

You will also see these upcoming events on our website:

– Saturday Night Lecture Series will resume this summer at the Center for Pranic Healing in Lyndhurst, NJ. As in previous years, members will receive a discount for entry.

– Our signature 13-semester Metaphysics and Parapsychology course will resume in person this coming fall. We are currently speaking with Ridgewood Adult School as a possible location.

– For members, we are opening participation in a Book Club and are seeking a location for a Full Moon Meditation to add to our Meditation series.

Thank you for your years of support and for your recent comments inspiring us to revitalize the Center after a Covid hiatus. Our new Board is excited to embrace this responsibility and is encouraged by your interest and continued support.

We maintain our status as a non-profit, all volunteer organization with the goal of continuing the work that our founder Donald Yott designed in 1956 of education, community, and sharing. We do this via adult education classes, monthly lectures, a variety of workshops, social events, book discussions, meditation groups, and more – with the intention of it being affordable for all.

In that regard, we ask for assistance:

as volunteers to help facilitate these functions and

for your continued support via membership and/or donations

Volunteers may email me at Pres4MCNJ@gmail.com;
membership at https://www.metaphysicalcenter.org/membership/; and
contributions at https://www.metaphysicalcenter.org/about/contribute/.

We very much embrace the community and co-creation concept, especially as a symbol of humanity and great possibilities.

Let’s see what we can together co-create !!!

Love & blessings,
Bill Prinzivalli
President
